چکیده
Introduction: Sensory processing is profoundly regulated by brain neuromodulatory systems. One of the main neuromodulators serotonin which influences higher cognitive functions, such as different aspects perceptual processing. Accordingly, malfunction in serotonergic system may lead to visual illusion psychiatric disorders, autism and schizophrenia. This study aims investigate modulation responses neurons stimulus orientation primary cortex. Methods: Eight-week-old naive mice were anesthetized a craniotomy was done on region interest Spontaneous visual-evoked activities recorded before during electrical stimulation dorsal raphe nucleus using vivo whole-cell patch-clamp recording. The square-wave grating 12 orientations presented. data analyzed Wilcoxon signed-rank test used compare two conditions that belong same neurons, with or without stimulation. Results: changed tuning nearly 60% decreasing mean firing rate independent response components, namely gain baseline response. It also increased small number (about 20%). Additionally, it left preferred sensitivity unchanged. Conclusion: Serotonergic showed bidirectional effect. causes predominately divisive subtractive decreases cortex can modify balance between internal external sensory signals result disorders.

Cortical processing is strongly influenced by the actions of neuromodulators such as acetylcholine (ACh). Early studies in anaesthetized cats argued that acetylcholine can cause a sharpening of orientation tuning functions and an improvement of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of neuronal responses in primary visual cortex (V1). Recent in vitro studies have demonstrated that acetylcholine reduce...

Neurons in macaque primary visual cortex (V1) show a diversity of orientation tuning properties, exhibiting a broad distribution of tuning width, baseline activity, peak response, and circular variance (CV). Here, we studied how the different tuning features affect the performance of these cells in discriminating between stimuli with different orientations. Previous studies of the orientation d...

In macaque primary visual cortex (V1), neuronal responses to stimuli inside the receptive field (RF) are modulated by stimuli in the RF surround. This modulation is orientation specific. Previous studies suggested that, for some cells, this specificity may not be fixed but changes with the stimulus orientation presented to the RF. We demonstrate, in recording studies, that this tuning behavior ...

Numerous observations suggest diverse and modulatory roles for serotonin (5-HT) in cortex. Because of the diversity of cell types and multiple receptor subtypes and actions of 5-HT, it has proven difficult to determine the overall role of 5-HT in cortical function. To provide a broader perspective of cellular actions, we studied the effects of 5-HT on morphologically and physiologically identif...

We "nd that Hebbian plasticity creates a self-organising map and show that constraining or modifying the standard Hebb rule in a particular way will l...
